Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to restore and preserve Green's Ledge Light, a historic offshore lighthouse in Long Island Sound near Norwalk and Darien, Connecticut.
Thanks to generous donors and volunteers, the Lighthouse is nearing the completion of a critical five-year restoration. Before we began, the Lighthouse was listed in ‘Deteriorated’ condition by the National Register of Historic Places, just one demarcation above ‘Ruins’.
Thanks to your support, the Lighthouse has a future. With urgent restoration work complete, we’ve launched the “Next 100 Years” – a vision to transform the Lighthouse into a beacon of research and education and to endow its preservation for generations to come.
Our History
First proposed in 1889 to help mariners through the west entrance to Norwalk Harbor, Greens Ledge Light was constructed at the western end of a long and dangerous shoal extending from Sheffield Island. Completed in 1902, Greens Ledge Light towers nearly 100 feet above Long Island Sound. In 1933, more than 30,000 tons of protective rocks from the excavation of Radio City Music Hall were added to the riprap foundation. While times have certainly changed, one hundred years later Greens Ledge Light continues to shine as an active aid to navigation.
Our Future
When the Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society first acquired Greens Ledge, the National Register of Historic Places classified the lighthouse as “Deteriorated,” just one demarcation above “Ruins.” Since 2017, Greens Ledge has undergone extensive renovations and restoration – to both address critical structural deficiencies and refinish and modernize the lighthouse’s interior and exterior areas. We have big plans for the future, follow along below.

Visit the Light
Greens Ledge Lighthouse is one of the only offshore lighthouses in the world offering full-access public tours. Visiting the Light in person is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Public tours are hosted by our community partners - The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk and the Seaport Association. Tours, events, and programs will be available from Late-Spring to early-Autumn seasons for ages 5 and up. Availability is limited.
Private Events
The Lighthouse is available for private tours and events - both large and small - the proceeds of which fund the restoration and ongoing preservation. The Lighthouse is a spectacular venue for a sunset cocktail party with friends and family, a magical couples date night, an unforgettable wedding reception, an extravagant birthday party, or simply a fulfilling private tour with one of our knowledgeable Keepers.
Sustainability
We’re working to transform Greens Ledge Lighthouse into a beacon for sustainability. Greens Ledge is entirely self-sufficient, relying on solar and wind energy, and utilizes a desalinization system that converts seawater from the Long Island Sound into freshwater. The Lighthouse also hosts a professional weather station, feeding data to critical forecasters, including the NOAA and the National Weather Service.
