Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Greens Ledge Lighthouse a unique event venue?
Greens Ledge is a fully restored, historic offshore lighthouse located approximately one mile from shore between Norwalk and Darien. Unlike many lighthouse venues located onshore or in a separate keeper’s cottage, events at Greens Ledge take place inside and around the lighthouse itself: a seven-story cast-iron tower surrounded by Long Island Sound. The lighthouse remains an active U.S. Coast Guard Aid to Navigation, with a working beacon approximately 100 feet above the water. Events support the ongoing preservation and operation of the lighthouse by the nonprofit Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society.
What types of events work best at the lighthouse?
The lighthouse is particularly well suited for family celebrations, birthdays, corporate gatherings, nonprofit events, intimate dinners, and other relaxed social occasions. Because everything must be transported by boat, simpler events generally work best. While we’ve hosted weddings and large events, the venue is generally not ideal for productions requiring extensive staging, rental furniture, elaborate décor, or several hours of setup. We can generally accommodate seated dinners for approximately 35–40 guests. Cocktail-style events can accommodate larger groups, and we have hosted corporate gatherings of more than 75 guests.
What is the food and drink policy?
The lighthouse operates on a BYOB basis. Any catering, bartending, or alcohol-service company is retained and paid directly by the client. Greens Ledge provides the venue and transportation but does not sell or serve food or alcohol. The client and its vendors are responsible for complying with all applicable alcohol-service, licensing, insurance, and age-verification requirements. Many events are non-catered, with guests bringing their own pre-prepared food and beverages. Some groups bring a helper or server to arrange food, refill drinks, and assist with cleanup, creating a simple semi-catered experience without the logistics of a full catering operation.
Where do guests and vendors check in for transportation to the lighthouse?
Transportation generally departs from the Community Beach Dock at: 59 Rowayton Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut. When the host is a member of a local Norwalk or Darien club with an accessible dock or beachfront, we can often arrange transportation from that location as well. Alternative pickup locations must be coordinated and approved in advance.
Is dedicated parking available for guests?
Parking at the Community Beach Dock is limited. A public parking lot is located approximately one-third of a mile away, across from Rowayton Market in the Ambler Public Lot. For larger events, we recommend communicating the parking arrangements to guests in advance and encouraging carpooling or ride-share transportation when practical.
How long is the boat ride? What is the transportation schedule?
The lighthouse is approximately one mile offshore, and the boat ride from Rowayton typically takes about 10 minutes. Travel time may vary slightly based on wind, waves, vessel traffic, and the pickup location. For events of 20 guests or fewer, transportation generally consists of one designated departure and one designated return trip. For larger events, we operate multiple shuttle runs based on the number of guests, event schedule, and available vessels. Guests will receive assigned or recommended departure times before the event so that arrivals can be handled efficiently. Return transportation typically begins shortly after sunset, with the final pickup shortly after dusk.
Can guests arrive in their own boats?
We strongly encourage guests to use the transportation arranged by Greens Ledge. Docking at an offshore lighthouse involves unique weather, tide, vessel, and safety considerations. Arrival by private boat is permitted only with advance approval and may be restricted based on weather conditions, vessel size, dock availability, and the event’s transportation plan. Guests should not plan to arrive directly at the lighthouse without prior authorization.
How early can the host and/or vendors access the lighthouse? Are outside caterers and vendors permitted?
One hour of setup time is included in standard event pricing. Earlier access can generally be arranged for $250 per additional hour to cover the added vessel and crew time. For most events, one hour is sufficient for music setup and the arrival of pre-prepared food and beverages. The outdoor furniture is already in place and typically only needs to be rearranged. Events requiring several hours of setup are generally too complex for the logistical limitations of an offshore venue. Simpler is better at the lighthouse. Outside caterers, musicians, bartenders, florists, photographers, and other vendors are permitted, but the client is responsible for coordinating all vendor arrangements and logistics.
Do you have a preferred caterer?
For catered events, we strongly recommend Michael Joseph’s Catering, which handles the majority of catered events at the lighthouse. Their team has its own boat, is highly familiar with the property, and can provide a turnkey catering and event-service experience. Because Michael Joseph’s coordinates its own transportation and setup, we generally do not charge the client additional lighthouse setup time for its normal arrival, which is usually approximately 60–90 minutes before the event.
What kitchen equipment is available?
The lighthouse has a full kitchen, traditionally called the galley, with: A four-burner propane stove and oven, A microwave, A refrigerator, A Keurig coffee maker, A large outdoor propane grill, Cookware, plates, glasses, mugs, utensils, and basic serving items. Although the kitchen is well equipped, we recommend bringing food largely prepared and using the kitchen primarily for warming, finishing, grilling, and serving. We have a small ice maker sufficient for small groups, but you should plan on bringing ice if you require large amounts.
Are tables, chairs, and other furnishings included? Are tents permitted?
The lighthouse has ample indoor and outdoor tables and seating, and additional furniture has not been necessary for the events we host. The existing furniture can be rearranged to support seated meals, cocktail-style events, presentations, or live music. We generally do not permit events to bring rental furniture due to the logistical coordination required. Tents are not currently permitted. The lighthouse is highly exposed to wind, and transporting, securing, and installing conventional event tents is both difficult and potentially unsafe.
Is electricity available for catering, music, and entertainment?
Yes. The lighthouse is powered by an off-grid solar, wind, and battery system that can support reasonable and practical catering and entertainment setups. Most live-music events use one or two acoustic performers. We have also successfully hosted a DJ using two large powered speakers. High-wattage cooking equipment, heating elements, specialty lighting, or unusually large sound systems must be reviewed in advance. Additional decorative lighting is generally unnecessary because the lighthouse has substantial exterior lighting.
Are there sound or music limitations? Are there décor restrictions?
There is no formal amplified-music restriction beyond the available electrical capacity and reasonable safety considerations. Because the lighthouse is approximately one mile from the nearest residences, ordinary event music is unlikely to create a disturbance. Open flames, including candles, are not permitted. Fireworks may not be launched from the lighthouse property. A client interested in a fireworks display would need to independently arrange a properly permitted offshore barge and professional operator. Banners, flags, signs, and similar decorations are generally permitted, provided they can be installed without damaging the historic structure.
Are restrooms available? Is fresh water available?
Yes. The lighthouse has two fully operational restrooms. The lighthouse has a solar-powered desalination system that converts water from Long Island Sound into fresh water. Bottled drinking water can also be provided or brought by the client.
Is Wi-Fi or cellular service available?
Yes. Cellular service is generally available, and the lighthouse has Wi-Fi through a Starlink satellite connection.
Is the lighthouse air-conditioned or heated?
The lighthouse has a central marine heating system but limited air conditioning due to power capacity. The building was designed to provide substantial natural airflow through its windows, and portable fans are available. Event dates affected by unusually extreme heat may need to be adjusted based on guest comfort and safety.
Is the lighthouse accessible for guests with mobility limitations?
Greens Ledge is a historic offshore structure and has unavoidable accessibility limitations. There is no elevator, and guests must be able to navigate the boat transfer, ramps, thresholds, and at least one flight of stairs. Reaching the upper floors requires climbing several flights of stairs, and access to the lantern and beacon areas includes ladders. Guests are not required to visit the upper floors to enjoy an event. Anyone with mobility concerns should contact us before booking so that we can discuss the boat transfer, property layout, and possible accommodations.
Are children permitted?
Yes, although children must be supervised closely at all times. The lighthouse is an offshore historic structure with stairs, ladders, railings, marine equipment, and direct access to the water. Parents should consider whether the environment is appropriate for very young children and discuss any concerns with us in advance.
Is there a required end time?
We generally aim to conclude events around dusk for safety and transportation reasons. For larger events, the first return shuttle typically departs shortly after sunset, with the final pickup shortly after dusk. Later events may be possible depending on the weather, guest count, transportation plan, and time of year.
What happens if it rains?
The indoor space is generally sufficient for smaller events. Larger events would typically need to be rescheduled if significant rain is expected. We generally leave the weather decision to the client and allow complimentary weather-related rescheduling. However, Greens Ledge reserves the right to postpone an event when wind, waves, visibility, thunderstorms, or other marine conditions create a safety concern for transportation or lighthouse access.
Who makes the final weather decision?
Greens Ledge closely monitors local marine forecasts and conditions at the lighthouse. The client may elect to reschedule due to an unfavorable forecast, subject to the terms of the event agreement. When conditions present a transportation or safety risk, Greens Ledge will make the final decision and require the event to be postponed.
What safety and emergency equipment is available?
The lighthouse is equipped with an AED, a full first-aid kit, cellular service, Wi-Fi, and a handheld VHF marine radio. Greens Ledge personnel and vessel crews will provide event-specific safety instructions. In a medical emergency, guests should call 911 and immediately alert a Greens Ledge staff member.
Is smoking permitted?
No. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside or outside the lighthouse.
Can guests swim, fish, or use paddleboards during an event?
These activities require advance approval and appropriate on-site supervision by a Greens Ledge staff member or a qualified member of your group to ensure you return safely. Strong currents can occur around the lighthouse, and life jackets are required for approved in-water activities.
How far in advance should we book?
Availability is limited because every event requires coordination of the lighthouse, captains, crew, vessels, tides, and other operational considerations. We recommend reserving larger or more complex events as early as possible, particularly for summer weekends.
When is payment due?
Payment is generally due in advance of the event.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation and rescheduling terms are outlined in the event agreement and may vary based on the event size, timing, and services reserved. When Greens Ledge must cancel because marine conditions make transportation unsafe, payments may be applied toward a mutually agreeable rescheduled date. Client-requested cancellations unrelated to weather are subject to the terms of the event agreement.
Charitable & Nonprofit Events
Revenues raised through these private events help to fund our annual preservation budget and nonprofit operating expenses, while also enabling us to offer a limited number of discounted or complimentary events to other qualified nonprofit organizations, including schools and nonprofit groups with aligned missions. In recent years, we’ve proudly supported a number of local organizations, including Maritime Aquarium and Open Door Shelter.
Throughout the year, we receive a great number of requests for discounted or complimentary events. As a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, there are limitations in our ability to support all requests. For consideration, please fill out the form below, providing details on the proposed event, the mission of your organization, and the potential benefits of the event to Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society - including reciprocal sponsorships/grants, donations of goods/services, or other partnership opportunities such as joint fundraising events.
Applications are reviewed quarterly by our committee and we’ll let you know via email if the request is approved or if more information is required.
